WHY WATER RESISTANCE? – Ergatta

Not all rowing machines are created equal.

Water resistance moves the way you move. It adapts to your every stroke, rising and falling with intensity as your effort changes. Here's everything that sets water resistance apart.

Three Reasons Rowers Choose Water

Easy on Your Joints

Water resistance creates a naturally smooth stroke. Whether you're recovering from injury or simply protecting your body for the long run, water rowing is one of the most joint-friendly full-body workouts available.

Quiet & Soothing

The gentle whoosh of water against the tank is all you'll hear. No clunking flywheels, no mechanical hum. Row early mornings, late nights, or during a sleeping baby's nap without disturbing anyone in your home.

Real Water Feel

Water resistance is self-regulating — the harder you pull, the more resistance you feel. That's exactly how it feels to row on the open water. No knobs to turn or levels to set. You just sit down and row.

Easy Maintenance — Seriously, It Takes Minutes

Water shows no signs of wear and tear. Just add a purification tablet to the tank once every 6-12 months to keep the water clean.

Fill Up the Tank

Use the included water siphon to top off the water tank (takes just a few minutes.) You'll only need to do this when you first set up your rower.

Add a Purification Tablet

Drop in one purification tablet every 6 months to keep your water crystal clear and prevent any buildup.

Wipe Down the Wood

Apply a thin coat of the provided Danish oil to keep the rower's hardwood looking beautiful over time. It takes just 60 seconds and keeps the grain rich for years to come.

Water Resistance FAQs

Will I need to change the water?

You won't need to drain and refill your tank regularly. Instead, simply drop in a purification tablet every six months to keep the water clean. If you ever relocate your rower, we recommend emptying and refilling — but that's a rare need.

How loud is a water rower really?

Much quieter than you might expect. The sound is a gentle, rhythmic whoosh — often described as soothing rather than disruptive. It's significantly quieter than a treadmill and most air rowers. Many Ergatta members row early in the morning in open-plan homes or small apartments without issue.

Is water rowing safe if I have joint pain or an injury?

Rowing is a low-impact exercise, and water resistance makes it even more so. The smooth, fluid stroke creates no sudden impact on knees, hips, or shoulders. That said, we always recommend consulting your doctor or physio if you're recovering from a specific injury before starting any new exercise program.

What's the difference between Ergatta's water resistance and other water rowers?

Ergatta uses a specially engineered WaterFlywheel with a formed paddle that cups the water more precisely than a standard flat paddle. This design reduces slippage and creates a more consistent, realistic stroke feel. Combined with Ergatta's game-based software platform, it's water rowing built for the modern home athlete and enthusiast alike.

Is water resistance better than air resistance?

They're both excellent, but they feel different. Air resistance is common in competitive rowing (like the Concept2) and ramps up quickly with every stroke. Water resistance offers a slightly smoother, more flowing feel — it's often described as more meditative and closer to on-water rowing. For most home athletes, water wins on sound, aesthetics, and feel.

How does water resistance compare to magnetic resistance?

Magnetic resistance is smooth and silent, with precise resistance levels you dial in manually — it's great for interval training and structured workouts. Water resistance, by contrast, adjusts automatically with your effort, so there's no setting to fiddle with mid-row. The feel is also more organic and fluid. If you want a rower that gets out of your way and lets you just row, water wins. If you want ultra-precise, programmable resistance levels, magnetic has an edge.
