Introduction
If you roll your eyes at the term personalization, you're not alone. It's used so often and so broadly that it feels like it's lost all meaning. Nevertheless, the personalization wave has influenced the way people engage with brands today — McKinsey research has found that 71% of consumers expect personalized interactions, and 76% get frustrated when that expectation isn't met.
Ergatta personalizes every workout through a calibration test that sets custom Intensity Zones, skill-based matchmaking in races, and adaptive tools like Rowbot and Weekly Goals & Streaks — so every session adjusts to your fitness level automatically, without you having to guess.
Ergatta didn't ride that personalization wave. We helped start it. Right up there with game-based design, providing real, meaningful personalization has been core to our mission since our founding. If you want to see how personalization fits into our broader approach, visit the Personalized & Intelligent page. Curious how we do it? Read on.
Calibration: Same Game, Different Experience
One of our guiding principles is that exercise is more engaging and rewarding when you're at the center of your workouts. That's exactly why we developed our patented fitness assessment technology: calibration.
After setting up a profile, the first workout you do is our calibration exercise. This short, 500m row measures your baseline rowing performance (via split time) at four different intensity levels — Paddle, Steady, Race, and Sprint. When you finish, we reveal your personalized Intensity Zones.
These zones are your custom training ranges. Every Ergatta workout is built from different mixes of Paddle, Steady, Race, and Sprint intervals. Because the targets are based on your performance, the instructions aren't vague. When the workout tells you to Sprint, you'll know exactly what that means for you. Best of all, your Intensity Zones automatically adjust as you improve, so workouts always stay challenging but achievable. This isn't just a nice-to-have: a randomized trial comparing individualized to standardized exercise prescriptions found that 100% of participants on an individualized intensity plan showed favorable fitness improvements, compared to less than 42% on a standardized plan.
Smart Scoring & Matchmaking
Our multiplayer games take workout personalization even further. In Races, you're pitted head-to-head against members with similar Intensity Zone ranges to you, which leads to highly competitive races. We also introduced Rowbot, a customizable pacing companion, for people who prefer to challenge themselves. You can set Rowbot to any rowing pace you want, then follow along to push yourself and reach new heights.
In Vortex, we introduced calibrated competition. Unlike traditional competitions that have a one-dimensional scoring system (like scoring everyone on raw speed alone), calibrated competition scores you based on how well you perform against your own Intensity Zones. That means you can race — and actually compete — with anyone, from an Olympic rower to your grandma. You can see how this fits into Ergatta's broader community competition features as well.
Tools to Build Your Fitness Habit
Even the best workouts don't matter if you're not motivated to show up in the first place. That's why we believe in adding a personalized touch to fitness motivation, too. Our Weekly Goals & Streaks feature lets you set how many days a week you want to row. If you hit your goal two weeks in a row, you'll start a streak — a phenomenon that research suggests is extremely motivating. A Scientific American article explains that streaks work because they motivate on two levels: small wins (doing one workout) and big wins (doing one workout a day for a month). Tracking small wins and big wins gamifies the mundanity of workout planning and helps you celebrate consistency.
Bottom Line
Some companies treat personalization like a gimmick. We think of it as a fundamental design principle. From calibration, to smart scoring and competitive matchmaking, to habit-building tools, we've designed the Ergatta experience to adapt to you, grow with you, and make every session meaningful. It's a difference you can feel every moment, every meter, and every milestone.

Key Takeaways
- Calibration is a 500m assessment that measures your baseline performance across four intensity levels and sets your personal Intensity Zones
- Individualized intensity prescriptions outperform standardized ones — research found 100% of participants improved on a personalized plan versus under 42% on a standard one
- Calibrated competition in Vortex scores you against your own Intensity Zones, not raw speed, so any two members can compete fairly
- Rowbot is a customizable pacing companion for members who'd rather push themselves than race others
- Weekly Goals & Streaks build motivation through both small, daily wins and larger, cumulative ones
- Every Ergatta feature — from calibration to matchmaking to Streaks — is designed to adapt to you rather than the other way around
