Note: This post builds on the information included in theIntroducing: Wavelengthblog. If you haven’t read that, we’d recommend starting there.
Wavelength offers a whole new world to explore and enjoy. In this deep dive series, we'll give an in-depth look at everything you should know. Here, we'll explain how you can really get in the game with Perks.
PERKS: AN OVERVIEW
Perks are special in-game abilities that assist you during Wavelength workouts. There are three different Perks available currently, and each gives you a unique ability, like increasing the points you receive from a target or protecting you from incurring certain penalties.
After you choose a Wavelength workout to complete (whether it be a single workout or a Campaign workout), you'll have the option to select a Perk for the workout.
The image below show the Perk selection screen, which you'll see when you're setting up your Wavelength workout (right before selecting a music station).
THE PERKS AT YOUR DISPOSAL
You won't have any Perks available when you first start playing Wavelength, but after collecting just three Stars, you'll unlock your first Perk, Submerge.
Here are the Perks that are currently available, listed in the order that you'll unlock them.
Submerge
Submerge protects you from losing points if your avatar goes below the water. When you do a workout with Submerge, if you go below the water, you'll see a blue diamond appear around your avatar (as pictured below).
There is a two-second grace period that allows you to dip below the water without penalty. Submerge kicks in after that two-second grace period, and adds an additional three seconds of protection.
Shield
Shield protects you from losing points if your avatar hits an obstacle. In the image below, you can see the avatar has moved through the red obstacle, and a yellow diamond has appeared. This indicates that Shield was activated and no points were lost from hitting the obstacle.
We'll discuss this further below, but Shield is an exhaustible Perk and needs to be "recharged" after each use.
Amplify
Amplify doubles the point total you receive from targets (and penalties). In the image below, you'll see the avatar hitting what's normally a 3-point alpha target. In this case, the player receives +6 points because they had Amplify activate.
There is a fourth Perk on the horizon, and we'll update this post with more details once it's released.
LEVELING UP YOUR PERKS
In the image above, you'll notice that below "Submerge," it says "Level 1." All Perks have a total of five levels. These don't correlate to the strength of the Perk, but rather to the Perk's rechargeperiod. That's the amount of time that must pass during your workout before you can use the Perk again). The higher the Perk level, the shorter the recharge period.
To level-up a Perk, you have to pass certain Star thresholds while using that Perk. For example, the only way to level-up Submerge is to earn Stars while using Submerge in workouts.
Here's a breakdown of the Perk levels, their respective recharge periods (the same for each Perk), and the Stars needed to unlock each level.

PERK BOOSTS
For every 10 Stars you collect, you'll earn one Boost. A Boost temporarily upgrades your selected Perk by one level for one workout. If you have Amplify - Level 1 and you apply a Boost, then you'll have Amplify - Level 2 for your next workout. If you already have Amplify - Level 5 and you apply a Boost, then you'll temporarily have a max level, which has the shortest recharge period at 90 seconds.
HOW PERKS CAN HELP
Perks add another dimension to our games, and to your workouts. If you really want to shoot for the "Stars" one day, then equip yourself with Amplify and hit as many of those high-value targets as possible. Or maybe the next workout in your chosen Campaign is looking tricky and you want an ace in your pocket; let that ace be Submerge or Shield and start that workout, knowing you've got Perks on your side.
What started with my husband thinking a rower would be a great low impact full body exercise turned into wanting one for myself. We wanted to compete and thought it would be a blast. My kids saw us doing it so we got one for them too so we can all compete.
All machinery is only as good as you using it, but I have loved the community and engagement that Ergatta brings to this rower. It’s always our choice to get on it, but Ergatta can keep you engaged when you are ready!
The one time of day I can relax: working out on my Ergatta
I hate most forms of physical activity. But I don't think of my time on the Ergatta Lite as a workout. It's a time for Zen meditation. I transport somewhere else hearing the water and moving forward. Truly grateful for this machine.
